What we cover

Start with what fits your life

01

Choosing where to train

Compare gyms and pools by the things that matter day to day: distance, opening hours, equipment, coaching and price. Ask about trial visits before committing.

02

Training outdoors

Parks, public exercise areas, riverside paths and the coastal routes in Jūrmala make free, flexible training possible for much of the year.

03

Preparing for events

Whether it is your first 10 km or a triathlon, gradual progression and planned recovery days matter more than any single hard session.

Popular in Latvia

Events worth training for

Local events are a great source of motivation. Check each organiser's official website for current dates, distances and entry rules.

Riga Marathon

One of Latvia's biggest running events, with several distances. Build up with regular easy runs, add longer sessions gradually and schedule recovery days.

Velodiena

A celebration of cycling as both recreation and sport. Increase distance step by step, and check your brakes, tyres and helmet before longer rides.

Liepāja Triathlon

Swimming, cycling and running in one race. Build each discipline separately before combining them into longer sessions.

Health first

Know where you are starting from

Most healthy beginners can start gently without extensive testing. But if you are returning after a long break, managing a health condition or planning demanding endurance training, it is sensible to talk to a doctor or a sports medicine specialist first.

Depending on your situation, they may suggest blood tests, a cardiovascular check or a fitness assessment. Many clinics now share results online, for example through the datamed patient portal, which makes it easier to keep track of your results and discuss them with your doctor.

Please note: this guide is general information, not medical advice. If you have a health condition, an injury, or you are planning a demanding training programme, talk to a doctor or another qualified professional first.
